Bernabei & Kabat, on behalf of 12 civil rights organizations, has submitted an amicus brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in the renewed appeal of the Travel Ban that was issued in 2017 and applies primarily to individuals from Muslim countries. The amicus brief argues that the Travel Ban is the product of several centuries of Muslim stereotyping in this country, and that despite the government’s after-the-fact justifications, it was motivated by animus towards Muslims. The amicus brief also explains how stereotyping minorities creates a climate for discrimination, and that government legitimization of these stereotypes has not only encouraged violence against Muslims (and those perceived as Muslims) but also inhibited Muslims and others in the practice of their religion.
