Latina Communications Professor Continues Appeal of Tenure Denial at American University

AU’s student newspaper, The Eagle , continues to follow Carolyn Brown’s appeal of her tenure denial. Ms. Brown taught broadcast journalism in AU’s School of Communication until former AU Provost Scott Bass denied her tenure in March 2017. After AU President Sylvia Burwell upheld Dr. Bass’s decision, Ms. Brown filed a charge with the D.C. Office of Human Rights. In her charge, Ms. Brown argues that Dr. Bass’s decision was discriminatory and retaliatory, and that he improperly relied on biased student evaluations.

The article also quotes School of Communication Professor John Watson, who stated: “This university for years has been making a push toward diversifying its student body and its faculty, and in this tenure decision we lose a highly qualified Latina who will be almost impossible to replace.”
